NBA legend Magic Johnson filed several trademark applications for his name as well as ‘Building. Magic. Together’ to launch Web3 services such as non-fungible tokens and virtual items for the Metaverse.
For those who don’t know him, Magic Johnson is a former professional basketball player from the United States and is considered one of the best point guards of all time. He is also an idol and legend in the Los Angeles Lakers, as he played for this team from 1979 to 1991, with a small comeback in 1996.
Now 63 years old, news broke that the legendary 32-year-old has filed trademark applications for his name as well as for ‘Building, Magic, Together‘ with the aim of launching different services on the Web3 that we will review below.
The trademark application was filed with the USPTO (The United States Patent and Trademark Office) on March 16 of this year. The NBA legend will seek to market, among other things, virtual goods. sports cards and memorabilia, digital collectibles, apparel and accessories for online use and virtual environments such as the Metaverse.
Moreover, the trademark application also indicates the creation of non-fungible tokens and a marketplace for buyers and sellers of goods and different types of digital assets. Mike Kondoudis, one of the most well-known lawyers in trademark registrations related to Web3, NFTs and Metaverse, posted on his official Twitter the detailed information about Magic Johnson’s intentions to go much deeper into the decentralized ecosystem.
I just said much more, as the Los Angeles Lakers legend has already launched his first digital collectibles. first digital collectibles in the form of non-fungible tokens with one of the most important companies in the field and that is related to the NBA.
Last year, specifically back on June 7, 2022, the former basketball player partnered with NBA Top Shot to present “The Anthology: Magic Johnson.The anthology: Magic Johnson“. This NFT collection was based on a total of 1600 anthology packs worth approximately $400 USD.
Each package contained at least four Johnson moments from the Lakers’ NBA championship seasons with the point guard as the undisputed star.
However, he’s not the only player in the NBA to file a trademark application related to the Metaverse, NFTs and Web3 in general. Previously, current figures of the most important professional basketball tournament such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant and LaMelo Ball have also filed applications to offer products and services in digital environments.

Finally, the NBA itself signed a multi-season contract with the company that leads one of the most important Web3 games.
